A test drive is your chance to discover problems that a visual inspection cannot reveal. Follow this checklist to make the most of your test drive.\n\n## Before You Drive\n\n- Check that the engine is cold (ask the seller not to start it)\n- Walk around the car one more time\n- Adjust mirrors and seat before starting\n\n## Starting the Engine\n\n- Listen for unusual noises on cold start\n- Note how quickly the engine starts\n- Check that all warning lights go off after starting\n\n## On the Road\n\n- Test acceleration in all gears\n- Listen for vibrations at different speeds\n- Test braking from moderate speed\n- Check steering responsiveness\n- Listen for wind and road noise\n- Test the AC and heating system\n\n## After the Drive\n\n- Check under the car for any new fluid leaks\n- Re-check exhaust smoke\n- Verify all warning lights are still off
